This was great! I am solidly in the hate-to-shop and therefore hate-the-grocery store category but have come up with some ways of tricking myself into not hating it as much. The treat bundle trick is a good one. Also, I like to give myself a little pep talk about how incredibly fortunate I am to be able to walk into a store and get anything I need (or want) and I didn't have to grow or create any of it AND I have the money to pay for it. That little reminder works wonders on my bad attitude.
Also, you mention that the grocery store is a microcosm of culture and that is so true! We live in an RV and so I am constantly shopping in different grocery stores and it really is one of the best ways to get some insight about what it's like to live there. I have also encountered some of the strangest, most fascinating people in grocery stores - especially in tiny little towns!
"Thank God someone finally separated the cilantro and parsley." PLEASE, I'm begging 😭
One of the ways in which I make grocery shopping suck less is to do a combo of curbside + self-shopping. (I realize this probably only applies to people in car-centric places where the big chains all do curbside for comparatively cheap.)
Curbside is for all the non-perishables/basics so I don't have to wander through the purgatorial center aisles. Self-shopping is for fun cheese and produce. Because twice now curbside shoppers have simply marked all my veg as not available and not substitutable??? like the produce section is empty??? there are no potatoes of any kind to be had anywhere??? IDK — AND even when the shoppers are able to get veg, they inevitably accidentally give me cilantro instead of parsley, which I can't really blame them because honestly, WHY are the herb and the poison right next to each other???
"Avocado toast with pickled onions (or even a radish)" haha, yes pickled radish ✨✨✨
I'm a lone voice in the wilderness! I LOVE grocery shopping. I *almost always do all the aisles. Maybe it's because my grocery store is independently owned, and is just the right size--not massive, but big enough to have everything++. Plus they have a great "international" aisle, the best local produce (beets and carrots right now, tho) and random finds that I am convinced fell off the back of a truck 'cause they only show up once, never to be seen again.
Lol! What a fun read, Sophia! While I am not so excited about the weekly grocery shopping grind, I love to go to them when I'm on vacation. Maybe because I know I'm not doing any serious cooking? But also because it's fun to see the different things offered. My husband and I were in Greece last year and found Ruffles potato chips that were oregano-flavored! Oregano!

Thank you for making the grocery store seem slightly less harrowing.

I literally have “walk around Whole Foods” on my upcoming NYC itinerary
